How the overage is calculated

This uses the worked example already in the calculator: a colour device with a monthly base charge of $89.00.

  1. Work out the pages used on each meter: current reading minus previous reading. Mono: 50,355 − 48,210 = 2,145 pages. Colour: 12,690 − 12,004 = 686 pages.
  2. Subtract the included pages to get the pages over. If used is at or below the allowance, the overage is 0; it never goes negative. Mono: 2,145 − 1,500 = 645 pages over. Colour: 686 − 500 = 186 pages over.
  3. Multiply the pages over by the per-page rate. Mono: 645 × $0.012 = $7.74. Colour: 186 × $0.069 = $12.834.
  4. Round each line to the nearest cent, with halves rounded up. $7.74 stays $7.74. $12.834 becomes $12.83.
  5. Add the base charge and the rounded lines: $89.00 + $7.74 + $12.83 = $109.57. The total is always the sum of the lines printed on the invoice, so the lines and the total never disagree by a cent.

Mono and colour are calculated separately. For a mono-only device, switch off "This device prints colour" and the colour line is left out.

Questions

How do quarterly contracts work?

Enter the meter readings from the start and the end of the quarter, and set the base charge to "per quarter". Enter the included pages for the whole quarter, not per month. The calculator then bills the pages used across those three months against that allowance.

What if the current reading is lower?

A lower current reading usually means the meter was reset or the device was replaced. In that case, enter the new meter's starting reading as the previous reading. The calculator shows an error and no total instead of billing a negative number of pages or a silent zero, so you can correct the reading first.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. The readings, rates and invoice details stay on your device. If you close or reload the page, the fields go back to the example.
